Framing and Hierarchy...Imposing Order

Hey all! Welcome to blog post #4! For this week, I played with framing and hierarchy to bring focus in different ways.

With these two photos, I experimented with cropping in an unexpected manner. According to Lupton and Phillips, "by closing in on a detail, cropping can change the focus of a picture, giving it new meaning and emphasis" (Lupton and Phillips, 119). The first photo is the original photo portraying the hidden moon behind the vast sky with fluffy clouds and part of a tree on the lower right hand corner. I used my phone and played with cropping by zooming in on the tree, bringing focus to it and "giving it new meaning." In the second photo, the viewer's perspective is more limited as the photograph portrays only the top part of the tree.

One thing that reminded me of back home in Hawaii were Acai bowls. This week I took a trip to satisfy my craving and played with hierarchy. Visual hierarchy refers to the arrangement or presentation of elements in a way that implies importance. The viewer's eyes naturally gravitate towards the Acai bowl because it is relatively bigger in size compared to the plant behind it. As the artist, I control the order in which information is processed. Lupton and Phillips mentioned that "visual hierarchy controls the delivery and impact of a message. Without hierarchy, graphic communication is dull and difficult to navigate" (Lupton and Phillips, 129). The viewer's attention shifts from the foreground to the middleground, then to the background as the photo blurs off in the distance. Being that the Acai bowl is relatively larger in size in comparison to the other objects and is in the foreground of the image, it is the main focus.

I hoped you enjoyed reading my nonsense.

With love,
Ashley

  1. I love how you play with framing in the top photograph as the clouds perfectly encircle and thereby frame the moon. It looks really pretty how the moon shines through the pinkish cloud in the background and stands in the center of the white clouds surrounding it in the foreground. so much dimension :)
